ABOUT US
The Embouchure Project is not a company, It is an ever-growing network that you are welcome to be a part of. The vision of TEP is to disappear when the network is self-sustaining: musicians suffering from Embouchure Syndrome, dystonia and other forms of disfunction know where to go for help; doctors have access to new and emerging science to improve treatment, medical therapists such as physical, osteo, occupational and massage have been trained to treat musicians using proven techniques, and scientists are building on existing research to advance therapies and techniques.
Access to TEP is entirely free. Musicians will get free consultation, and be offered a range of options to choose from. Everyone’s path through disfunction will be different, so their paths to recovery will be unique.
Our only goal is to help.
Our Story
In 2018 after a period of intense practicing and stress, Gabriel Radford developed Embouchure Syndrome which was eventually diagnosed as Embouchure Dystonia. At the condition’s height, he was barely able to make a sound on the instrument.
After years of work he eventually found a path to recovery, and founded The Embouchure Project to help others find their own paths back to health.
Vital in his success was his work with Bronwen Ackermann of the University of Sydney. She uses a scientist’s approach and decades of experience to address the underlying physical deficits that her expert analysis reveals.
Further work with Frankie lo Surdo helped turn Bronwnen’s analysis and exercises into on-the-instrument practical strategies.
Finally conversations and consultations with horn player turned neurologist Dr. Xenos Mason helped him realize the potential impact of what had been discovered.
Gabriel was left with an immense sense of gratitude for those who had helped, and he was inspired to form The Embouchure Project to study these techniques and any others that may help musicians who need them.
